What is a Center of Influence (COI) for an RIA?

A Center of Influence is a non-competing professional whose clients are also a fit for your services, and who is in a position to refer those clients to you. For RIAs and wealth managers, common COIs include CPAs, EAs (Enrolled Agents), estate attorneys, divorce attorneys, business brokers, bookkeepers, fractional CFOs, and property and casualty insurance agents. The strongest COI relationships are reciprocal: each professional refers to the other when there is a fit.

How do RIAs build CPA referral partnerships?

The most effective CPA referral partnerships are built deliberately, not informally. Why don't CPAs reciprocate referrals to financial advisors?

Most CPAs don't reciprocate referrals to financial advisors for one of four reasons: they have an existing exclusive arrangement with another RIA, they have a family conflict (a spouse or sibling is an advisor), they run their own wealth management arm internally, or the relationship was never structured to make reciprocation a clear and easy action.
